Reality Check
Other then my immediate family, I rarely find my self eating around other people. I’m so used to cooking and eating with my vegan girlfriend that I often forget how rare vegans really are. I’ve been finding my self just assuming that every nice person I meet is vegan. I was watching Animal Cops on Animal Planet just a few hours ago and started to think about how much these people must care about animals. This was quickly contradicted when the show went to commercial break and numerous advertisements for restaurants were displayed across my screen. I am having a difficult time understanding how can those who are fighting animal cruelty on the front lines not make the connection between the conditions of these domestic animals and the conditions animals suffer in order to become a hamburger.
I don’t mean to attack the SPCA, I think the work and efforts they make are great. It’s just that a quick glance at Meet Your Meat is much more gruesome then many of the cases featured on the television show I was watching. I cannot wrap my mind around the concept of devoting ones life to helping one species of animals, while funding and condoning the suffering of another. The mentality of todays world truly is troubling, after all if dogs were put into the same conditions as pigs in the meat industry there would most definitely be an uprise.
