Bugs

I often have a great deal of difficulty explaining my veganism in general to family, friends, and the like. The ones who actually listen are able to follow me up until the point where I start talking about insects. I can quote my oldest brother saying “but they’re just bugs” when I was explaining how bees are killed in the process of extracting honey. Most are vastly desensitized to the killing of insects but I have to point out that they are still living creatures. Why on earth do people feel the need to go out of the way to kill them?

Just the other day in my first period English class a roach was crawling on the floor. A girl across the room screamed at the site of it, and just as I was about to pick it up to take it outside the kid next to me stomped on it. I doubt even noticed the look of horror on my face, but I had such a hard time understanding what the big deal was. Why are people so afraid of bugs? I can honestly say that I have never heard of any one being bit by a common cock roach. I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I do try my hardest to be as vegan as possible. I just have a great deal of trouble understanding why people are oblivious to the idea of death.

I realize that I won’t be able to convince most people to vegetarian let alone vegan, but I just wish more people would think about how they treat the creatures we share this world with. My point can pretty much just be wrapped up in this statement, before you step on a bug ask your self does this insect really pose any real threat to me? If not then just live and let live. Most things are on this earth for a reason, it’s never swell to mess with nature.
