“Animal Lovers”
As a resident of Texas, one quickly realized how little compassion the world has for non human animals. Over the past month the Houston Live Stock and Rodeo has grasped onto everyones interest and sparked a great deal of conversation. I cannot say that I am appalled, but I am mostly certainly disgusted by the number of “animal lovers” who attend these events.
A close friend of mine is among this group of people, and was quite irritated by my stance on the rodeo. She showed me pictures of rabbits, from the rodeo, that she thought were adorable. She literally refused to listen when I briefly began to speak about the conditions those animals face. I must admit this is a very common reaction among omnivores who claim to care about animals. Another example is how my mother literally walks away from conversations that involves the mistreatment of animals. Both of these people use common excuses such as “it’s too hard to think about” or just simply “I don’t want to hear it”.
They are correct in the sense that these issues are so despicable that it truly is difficult to think about. The problem is the vast amount of the population that share this ideal and refuse to reflect on their own decisions. Vegans are often shot down because of being seen as “elitist” who are “too preachy”, that is only a half truth. The community in which this blog affiliates itself with are not elitist, but simply the small percentage of the population who take time to think about these issues. We are the few who make compassionate decisions, and are often put under fire because we remind the world of the suffering of its guilty pleasures. It is not possible to truly love animals with out going vegan, which includes not supporting the rodeo. I see looks of terror as these self acclaimed “animal lovers” see footage of animal cruelty while eating meat and I just think of how sad it really is. A difference could be made if only people would take responsibility for their actions, and stop making excuses.
