Pet Insurance
As humans the health and well being of the animals we welcome in our home is our responsibility. Unfortunately we are not always at a financial status to give our pets the best care possible and it results in our companions having to be put down. My family was put into this situation when our 14 year old dog fell off of my parents king size bed. She landed on her leg and it broke. We had a choice of either paying $4,000 for surgery or putting her out of her misery. Luckily my parents had been saving to go on a cruise for their 21st wedding anniversary, and we were able to keep our dog alive. I often wonder about people who do not have the resources to save their companions, it must truly be devastating to have to put down a loved one when it is not absolutely necessary.
My other dog loves to ride in my car but I often worry what will happen to him if I get into an accident. I usually leave him at home because I could never forgive my self if anything happened to him.
It really lifted my spirits when MSNBC ran an article that claims more employers are offering pet insurance and another that Progressive Auto Insurance has added coverage for cats and dogs. Progressive will cover up to $500 if anything happens to your beloved companion in an automobile accident at no extra expense to the customer. I realize that not everyone can afford health insurance let alone pet insurance but I think it gives hope to the Animal Rights Movement. After all, it’s never a bad thing when people stop considering animals as material possessions and start seeing them as part of the family.
