Focusing On My Health

After reading Eric Prescott’s column at Taste Better on individual activism, I began thinking about veganism and how it reflects my health. I have to admit I have always seen my self as the “junk food vegan” and have always had a great desire to make a change in my eating habits. When Eric mentioned that being healthy can actually be a form of activism it really hit home. He is right, I remember being a slightly over weight vegetarian and every one thinking I was the odd ball for not being super skinny. Over a year later as a vegan, every one points out how skinny I am and then complain that I don’t eat enough.

By educating my self on healthy eating habits I can be more equipped to make arguments for veganism. After all we all get sick of the “where do you get your protein?” questionnaires, right? Not only that but by looking healthy I can attach a positive image to the vegan movement. I decided to make an effort to better understand this area of veganism, as well as take a stand for my own well being by picking up a copy of Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina .

Today I dived right into the chapter with the Vegan Food Pyramid and began planning meals based on my dietary needs. I have to say it feels good to know that I’m not only improving the life of animals but also my own.
